Fibromyalgia CEU Module Offered Although the exact numbers are unknown, it is estimated that up to 6% or more of the US population has fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome(FM/CFS) - that means more than 18 million people in the United States alone. Long thought of as a women's disease, it also affects men and children. Until now there has been no nutrition guidance for professionals directed at alleviating the symptoms of FM/CFS. Now CEU4U has a new module for dietitians called Fibromyalgia (FM) What Dietitians Need to Know that for the first time provides dietitians with nutritional interventions specific to the needs of fibromyalgia sufferers.
Module author Laura Wittke MS RD has condensed the findings of scientific studies to give a thorough understanding of current knowledge on this disease that affects dermatological, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, metabolic, musculoskeletal, and neurological systems. She explains the dysautonomia of fibromyalgia that accounts for the diverse body system involvement, and provides a background for understanding FMS on a tissue and cellular level.
Referenced with over 70 academic citations, the peer-reviewed module explains the impact of FMS on client weight and the need for FM-specific weight management strategies, and particularly notable, addresses the increased risk factors for chronic disease with dietary advice. Included are dietary interventions that have been used successfully for the conditions that overlap with FM, including vulvodynia, chronic fatigue, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and others. It provides tables of FMS symptoms by body system, along with dietary supplements that may be useful and physical and lifestyle characteristics that influence quality of life.
The module provides 5 CPEUs for the learning needs codes: 5000 Medical Nutrition Therapy, 5400 Case Management, and 5420 Complimentary Care and Alternative Therapies. The topics covered fall under the categories of current issues and/or controversies, application of nutrition to clinical problems, and nutrition counseling for clinical diagnoses, among others. It is available at www.CEU4U.com under the heading Dietitians and Nutrition, listed under both Complimentary Nutrition and Integrative Medicine and Medical Nutrition Therapy.
NOTE: The module without CEU credits is available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format on this site for a payment of $19.95 using PayPal
